Retail Strategies

Creative Works options for project sales

Current Creative Works resale methods

    • You develop, update, and maintain your subscription system (programming and customer database) on the server of your choice, which allows you easier updates and tweaks
    • We generate a random set of unique access codes and send you a copy as a CSV file
    • We sell the code from our site, handling all the monthly sales tax reports, annual CashNet audits, PCI compliance, and customer issues dealing with purchases
    • The customer uses the access code on your site, after which you remove it from your list
    • Sales are directly deposited to a Creative Works operating unit set up specifically for your project
    • Royalties are distributed as per BYU's Intellectual Property policy
    • Visit cwcodes.byu.edu to see where and how your product would appear
    • You deliver a copy of the digital property you wish to sell with associated retail data (submit marketing form)
    • We set it up on our CW Digital site
    • After purchase customers download the item
    • Sales are directly deposited to a Creative Works operating unit set up specifically for your project
    • Royalties are distributed as per BYU's Intellectual Property policy
    • The catalog site is specifically for items that have to be shipped: books, DVDs, posters, etc.
    • Creative Works can assist with duplication and storage of items to be sold
    • With developer product information (submit marketing form) we will set up an entry on our Catalog website
    • Sales are directly deposited to a Creative Works operating unit set up specifically for your project
    • Royalties are distributed as per BYU's Intellectual Property policy
  • We currently have several online subscriptions set up in different ways:

    • TELL (tell.byu.edu) is a combination of downloads from our server as well as redirected links to videos on another server. We maintain a customer database tracking materials purchased and expiration dates
    • Masterful Choral Conducting (choral.byu.edu) is a conversion of an existing set of 7 DVDs and a printed manual into an online course. We maintain a customer database as well as hosting the learning modules
    • Biblical Hebrew (bibhebrew.byu.edu) is an interactive site with several modules and a flashcard section that teaches and lets students practice Biblical Hebrew. We host the learning modules and maintain a customer database

These sites were all older products that we experimented with to find and offer eCommerce solutions for. At this time, however, we strongly encourage developers to use our Access code system for several reasons:

    • The online product is much easier to update by the developer when they have direct access to their own server
    • Tech support for their customers is also more easily done by those who are familiar with the product

We would gladly entertain hosting further subscription services, but there would be some requirements that might be restrictive:

    • The service would have to be delivered in its entirety and be compatible with our servers and built in a language and framework our programmers are familiar with
    • The service would have to be self-contained and never need updating
  • Splash pages are simple, single pages that contain more detailed information about a project:

    • No embedded programming, just a formatted page
    • Includes link(s) to a site where a product can be sold
    • Allows more creativity (to match packaging, usually) than Brightspot does
    • Specialized URL's (with a byu.edu domain name) can be assigned and pointed to the page and managed by Creative Works
    • Examples:
