Ordering ISBN/UPC

When barcodes are needed and how to order them

ISBN stands for International Standard Book Number and are issued by Bowker. However, Print Services obtains these on behalf of BYU. They charge $25 if they print the work and $50 otherwise. Their online form is at cougarprints.byu.edu/isbn. This price does not include the actual barcode needed for packaging. However, Creative Works can generate a barcode if the ISBN is provided.

If a project is a book then an ISBN is definitely desirable. However, if the work is to be licensed then the licensee typically provides their own ISBN. Although CD's and DVD's can be registered for an ISBN, the UPC is currently used more in common sales practice.

UPC (Universal Product Code) barcodes can be obtained from Creative Works after submitting a Marketing Info form.
